Today, Governor Wolf signed a statewide disaster declaration. The purpose of this declaration is to improve response and remove barriers.
“I am taking this step to protect Pennsylvanians from this looming public health crisis, and I am using every tool at my disposal to get those suffering from substance use disorders into treatment, save more lives, and improve response coordination.” — Governor Wolf
The declaration has 3 main focus areas:
- Enhancing Coordination and Data Collection to Bolster State and Local Response
- Improving Tools for Families, First Responders, and Others to Save Lives
- Speeding Up and Expanding Access to Treatment
This is a great step in the right direction that will last 90 days. Pennsylvania is now the number 4 state in overdose deaths.
There are several pieces of this declaration that stand out to me, including the creation of an Opioid Operation Command Center that will meet weekly monitor progress.
The authorization to move forward on the contract for the hotline below. People need to know this number is available and have a way to reach out for help.
The 24/7 helpline, 1-800-662-HELP
The Leave Behind is a great aspect that providers for responders to leave naloxone behind for at risk people. The standing order for naloxone has been updated to make naloxone even more available.20180110-Fact-Sheet-Opioid-Epidemic-Disaster-Declaration-2018
