South Pittsburgh Opioid Action Coalition

Nearly a dozen people have overdosed in Carrick in the last month, many of them in the bathrooms of businesses along the Brownsville Road corridor. The addiction epidemic is ravaging our neighborhoods and taking to many lives. We are witnessing this first hand in our local communities. In 2017, Carrick has already had 40 overdoses and five deaths, making it the neighborhood with the second-most opioid-related incidents in Pittsburgh, just behind Downtown. It is beyond time that we work on real solutions and change how we fighting this health crisis. We have seen some wonderful organizations speak up after the loss of a loved one as well as people who are in recovery that are fighting to help with this problem. I met Natalia Rudiak, city councilperson from Pittsburgh’s District 4 after we lost Amber. I have been speaking with her often over the nearly 2 years since we lost Amber. She is a caring  person who has shown to me that she is serious about fighting this crisis. Recently her and I spoke about the coalition that she is trying to build to fight this crisis in South Pittsburgh. After our discussing I filled our my letter of intent to volunteer on this coalition and strongly encourage you to do the same. Natalia is looking to build a coalition of people to find and build real solutions from people on...

Narcan Saves Lives

Friday, April 5th Richard Jones and I discussed Narcan and the current “soap boxes” on Facebook. The Facebook meme that I have seen compares Narcan to Chemotherapy and the Epipen. All of these medicines are very important and need to be readily available. The meme promotes the myth that Narcan is free, yes I said myth. Narcan is readily available through the country, I have seen prices between $100 and $150 for a Narcan kit. What is Narcan™ (naloxone)? Narcan™ (naloxone) is an opiate antidote. Opioids include heroin and prescription pain pills like morphine, codeine, oxycodone, methadone and Vicodin....

We Have To Get LOUDER

An 11-year-old girl was taken to the hospital Wednesday after a suspected overdose, a Pittsburgh police spokeswoman said Thursday. When I saw this on my news feeds I was in shock. An 11 year! I am so afraid that we are only in the beginning of this horrific epidemic that is taking more lives than gun violence. There are now more drug related driving charges that alcohol. As part of its annual report, the CDC also found that rates for 8 of the 10 leading causes of death rose last year, causing the nation’s life expectancy to go down for the first time in more than 20 years. Read more. Also, this week a HUGE amount of Carfentanil was found in a Pennsylvania HOME. Carfentanil is more potent than morphine, heroin and fentanyl. A dose of carfentanil as small as a grain of sand can be deadly, which is why the hazmat team was needed to remove it from the home. We have to do more and we have to act NOW. We are loosing a generation of people to the addiction epidemic. We need to gather and let our voices be heard loud and clear. We need real plans that are actionable. 6) If you are a real recovery advocate. Don’t let the politicians parade you out in front of the community for a “photo opp” without saying some hard things....

Speak Out.. Advocate

“I believe we can do this. I believe we change the world. I truly believe that in my heart, with each individual person,” Rainaldi said. We must all speak out for what we believe in. Advocating with your heart is so important to raise awareness and help others. I do believe we can change the world, one person at a time. There are many wonderful people that are fighting this horrible health crisis, the addiction epidemic is taking so many lives and we must continue to fight. “The Shine,” was the brainchild of Stanick, who talked about the glow...
